Comme des Garçons Collection

Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons, is known for redefining what fashion can be. Rather than focusing on beauty in a traditional sense, she treats clothing as a form of art. Her designs often blur the line between fashion, sculpture and concept. The Spring/Summer 1997 collection clearly shows this vision, using garments not just to dress the body, but to transform it.

The Body Meets Dress – Dress Meets Body SS97 collection changed how the body was seen in fashion. Rei Kawakubo used foam padding to create uneven and rounded shapes. This broke traditional rules of fit, balance, and beauty.
2. Lumps and Bumps:

The collection became known as Lumps and Bumps. Padded shapes on dresses and tops changed the body’s form instead of decorating it. Kawakubo used this to question why only certain body shapes are accepted in fashion.

Rei Kawakubo avoids explaining her work. She believes titles are for journalists, not definitions. By staying silent, she lets people create their own meanings, which is central to her creative approach.
